Amethyst Bay Magazine Ad
Project type
Illustration, Branding
The Amethyst Bay Resort & Spa magazine ad was created with Photoshop to enhance the photographs, and Illustrator to design the ad itself. I employed elements and principles of design, to ensure that the audience would scan the most important information. Following the “F-shaped” pattern of reading, I included hierarchy throughout the ad by using different font sizes, widths, and colors. Upon receiving the prompt to design the magazine ad and the web banner ad, I started by reading the client scenario. Amethyst Bay Resort and Spa, a business located in St. Thomas, is a new resort that is looking for potential clientele who have either not traveled to the Caribbean Island or who have previously stayed in the island. With that in mind, I started thinking about what emotion I wanted to convey in my designs. Therefore, my message was that Amethyst Resort & Spa was a luxurious, relaxing escape from the busy real-world.
While brainstorming for ideas, I took inspiration from magazine ads from other luxury resorts, to get an idea of what type of images were appropriate for this scenario, as well as the composition of the ad. After looking at the ads of potential competitors, I went ahead and looked for high-quality royalty-free images that would suit my client’s ad designs. The images selected were those that displayed amenities and services that the resort provides such as spa services, private pools, and private yachts. As suggested by peers and the professor, I changed the typography and changed the alignment of the text and included a mockup. For this design, I followed the directions of the original assignment, with exception of using different typefaces. By making those changes, the presentation of the design improved.
